"The poison of cynicism is spreading."

As a Hollywood star, he knows what it is, victims of the media - in the thriller "State of Play", he plays a reporter even now, the ethical conflict in hand. In an interview with blogs ONLINE Russell Crowe explains why journalists back to their credibility to do.

blogs ONLINE: Actually, Brad Pitt should be the main role in the journalist thriller "State of Play" take over. How did you finally about to play the part?

Crowe: last summer, when I travel after a long rotation finally back home in Australia was suddenly called by someone at Universal Pictures. This is not some company for me, but according to the joint projects of "Gladiator" to "American Gangster" a studio full of real friends. They explained how they brads rejection stuck in the terminal and pointed me to the earlier films by director Kevin McDonald, whose quality is the best I will not be able to ignore. And, finally sent me the "State of Play" script. Schwupps even flew my vacation planning out the window.

blogs ONLINE: They liked the material immediately, even though you are extremely picky?

Crowe: I follow a principle of youth since the rule: If I have to read a script feel a physical reaction, whether I now get goose bumps or tears fill my eyes, then this is the job that I must accept. I feel compelled - out of respect for the gods of the film. That is and remains the central reason of which I am in this industry: In order to tell stories that touch me emotionally.

blogs ONLINE: Did you have a special relationship with the figure of the journalist Cal McAffrey after this career as a young man considered himself once had?

Crowe: Not only that - I have in the past 30 years, meeting regularly to journalists and a lot of observations typical material can collect. Personally, I was praised by the press, slating and betrayed, I must find friends and so many must endure dirty attack. My picture of the media is different, you can believe me. Therefore it was important to me, in "State of Play" no heroic figure to play the journalist as iron reconnaissance. But a man who is not in accordance with the ethical rules of living, of which he speaks - as he just a man.

blogs ONLINE: You may not particularly journalists, huh?

Crowe: But! All this took me by my principle never discouraged attitude that the journalism in the core is a classy professional. If it is taken seriously. So when a reporter critical of his work itself is concerned, a first, second and third version of an article written, and tries to at least a certain level of objectivity.

blogs ONLINE: But most reporters take it with the loyalty of your facts do not think so accurately?

PERSONAL

The career of actor Russell Crowe, born in 1964 in New Zealand, began in Australia, where he lived since childhood. One of his first, he had roles in the soap "Neighbors". In the USA, he finally in 1995 in Sam Raimis "Faster than death" at the side of Sharon Stone reputation. The breakthrough came two years later with "LA Confidental", but no later than with Crowe's Oscar-award-winning lead role in the hero-epic "Gladiator."

Crowe: To believe that a journalist always objectivity could be committed, is just bullshit. We all have our faults and preferences - and that's fine. Good journalism is one for me under the umbrella of the creative arts, when this term is not cynical, but purist understands. I expect that an author so personally involved is like a painter or a filmmaker, because only with this attitude is the best work. Nevertheless, I am aware that the circumstances of the occupation of the individual entitlement can dilute reporters. Whether it is pressure of time or spiteful editors who are looking for a liquid lunch routinely at the heart of a story break, so they are better on Page five beside the display for women's underwear fits.

blogs ONLINE: "State of Play" paints a critical picture of commercial thinking in the media industry.

Crowe: If there is a crisis in journalism, then it was conjured up by journalists.

blogs ONLINE: What do you mean?

Crowe: Messages are decades gradually been trivialized. It was admitted that the boundary between fact and entertainment blurred for better conditions or higher rates to reach. You can take any newspaper, regardless of their reputation, and will always find pages on which those responsible know that they deliver nothing but banality. Between articles on the greenhouse effect or policy packages can be found everywhere at the pleasure of the readers are thought to drought and facts about the private lives of prominent contemporaries report. It then runs under "Miscellaneous", perhaps you smiles and questions the reliability of the sources no more. But who cares it is just who or what can be distinguished in the handbag is LeAnn Rimes?

blogs ONLINE: Would you like to provide the reader with an interest in persons of public life deny?

Crowe: Of course not, but are now widespread speculation or facts by Innuendo replaced. It prints quotes from informants around the world without any credibility to, in my industry, this is done daily. And because it is just all over, can use the editors in case of doubt on her defense. But when you deal with these lax truth for athletes or actors can crawl into the leaf, the door open for a similar deal with the President, is not it? The poison of cynicism is spreading. Suddenly, a generation of readers created, the messages can no longer be completely trusted, because they were accustomed to triviality.

blogs ONLINE: What responsibility artist in this climate? They even have some recently with "The man who never lived" a film about the Middle East film that ultimately fictional entertainment, but also to those viewers a picture of the region provided that are not otherwise informed.

Media thriller "State of Play": The death looks good on him (18.06.2009)

Crowe in the film industry should be aware of all that, between Oslo and Orange County will be internalized, what we show on the screen. No director should be behind the argument of fiction must hide if he is a serious topic. The effect of pictures and dialogues at the Zeitgeist is massive. I myself can only be done at my own career and always try to look, this responsibility. Sometimes it is the end result is not satisfied, in other cases, we actually achieved something.

blogs ONLINE: Can you give an example?

Crowe: Take one of my earlier films, "romper stomper," a true story about neo-Nazis and skinheads in Melbourne. Their motion is then we formally have been killed. The audience felt attracted by a substance which is compatible with adrenaline and drama attracted - but at the end of the story was all the protagonists dead or in jail. The visualized violence was necessary, but they seemed repulsive and invited not to imitate one. This debate must be an industry ever again, which unfortunately often also violence outside a moral context as attractants uses. There is an ongoing discussion, which necessarily involve the question of boundaries of artistic freedom raises. I did not have all the answers. But in the choice of my projects, I try never to forget how powerful the medium, which we ourselves operate.

blogs ONLINE: As a result of the financial crisis is widespread, according to the fear that Hollywood will avoid more serious productions, and more on escapism will. Your opinion?

Crowe: I think the opposite is the case. Sure, we experience a boom in the event films, in which even the last obscure comic character on canvas size will be inflated. But especially in the wake of the change of government in America is just an encouraging environment in which people learn more about their beliefs, passions and concerns speak. You can feel how rich people have it, with trivial small bites to be fed, whether in the media or in popular culture. I think Hollywood will be strengthened to take account. If not from inner conviction, but then from the economic interest to this audience hungry not finally to lose.
